Description

Muhammara is a traditional dip from the city of Aleppo, a major city in northern Syria, and is enjoyed widely across the Levant.

Its name comes from the Arabic word “muḥammara,” meaning “reddened” or “made red,” a nod to its vibrant colour, traditionally achieved with roasted red peppers, a little tomato paste, and sometimes Aleppo pepper. Classic muhammara also includes pomegranate molasses for its sweet tang and walnuts for richness, although this version takes a simpler approach with hazelnuts instead – our own easy spin on the beloved original.

If you’re looking for a dip that’s packed with flavour but couldn’t be easier to make, this roasted red pepper dip is sure to become a favourite. Sweet roasted peppers are blended with nuts, garlic, lemon and a gentle kick of chilli to create a silky, creamy dip that’s rich, smoky and incredibly moreish. Despite its luxurious texture, it’s made entirely from wholesome ingredients and comes together in just five minutes.

Perfect for sharing, it makes a delicious addition to a grazing board, a healthy snack, or a simple starter. Serve with warm toasted pitta, crunchy ciabatta or fresh vegetable sticks for a colourful dish that’s guaranteed to disappear quickly.

Dip Ingredients

• 450g jar roasted red peppers (drained)
• 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
• ½ wholemeal pitta (or any half slice of bread; use a gluten-free option if required)
• 100g chopped hazelnuts or walnuts
• 2 garlic cloves (minced)
• 2 tsp chilli flakes
• Grated rind and juice of ½ lemon
• Salt and pepper, to taste

To serve

• Drizzle of olive oil
• 1 handful parsley (chopped)
• Toasted ciabatta slices or wholemeal pitta (gluten-free options)

Method

1. Add all the drip ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth and creamy.
2. Spoon the dip into a serving bowl, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle over the chopped parsley, and serve with toasted ciabatta, warm wholemeal pitta, or a gluten-free alternative.
